Can TriLift Help with Dry Eye? Understanding Eyelid Function and Advanced Treatment

A new approach to supporting eyelid function and personalized dry eye care.

Dry eye disease can cause persistent burning, irritation, redness, fluctuating vision, and eye fatigue. While many people associate dry eye with insufficient tear production, the condition can also be related to eyelid function and an unstable tear film.

At New York Eye & Laser, we believe effective dry eye management starts with understanding the underlying cause of each patient’s symptoms. TriLift is a technology being investigated for its potential role in improving blink quality in selected patients with dry eye disease.

What Is TriLift?

TriLift by Lumenis is a technology that combines Dynamic Muscle Stimulation (DMSt) with radiofrequency (RF) energy. It was developed primarily for facial muscle stimulation and aesthetic treatments.

Researchers have also investigated whether applying these technologies to the area beneath the lower eyelids may help improve eyelid function and blink quality in patients with dry eye disease.

A clinical feasibility study sponsored by Lumenis evaluated this combination in adults with moderate to severe dry eye symptoms and signs of lower eyelid laxity. The study explored whether treatment could improve blink quality. Further evidence is needed to establish its clinical benefits for dry eye management. Clinical study details.

Why Does Blinking Matter for Dry Eye?

Every time we blink, tears are distributed across the surface of the eye, helping maintain a smooth, protective tear film.

Blinking also supports the normal function of the meibomian glands, which produce the oils that help prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.

When blinking is incomplete or eyelid function is impaired, the tear film may become unstable, potentially contributing to dryness and irritation.

Common symptoms associated with dry eye include:

  • Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
  • Redness and eye fatigue
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Discomfort during prolonged screen use
  • A feeling of dryness despite frequent blinking or artificial tear use

Identifying whether these symptoms are related to tear production, eyelid function, meibomian gland dysfunction, or other factors is an important part of choosing the right treatment.

How Is TriLift Being Studied for Dry Eye?

TriLift combines two technologies:

Dynamic Muscle Stimulation (DMSt)

DMSt delivers controlled electrical stimulation to facial muscles, producing muscle contractions. Researchers are investigating whether targeted treatment around the lower eyelids may improve eyelid movement and blink quality in appropriately selected patients.

Radiofrequency (RF) Energy

RF delivers controlled energy that produces heating in targeted tissue. In TriLift’s aesthetic applications, this technology is used as part of facial tissue treatment. Its specific contribution to dry eye improvement requires further clinical evaluation.

The goal of the dry eye feasibility research is to determine whether this combination can improve blink quality in patients with selected eyelid-related problems. TriLift should not be considered an established treatment for all forms of dry eye disease.

Who May Need an Evaluation for Eyelid-Related Dry Eye?

Patients experiencing persistent dry eye symptoms may benefit from a comprehensive examination, particularly when symptoms are accompanied by incomplete blinking or eyelid laxity.

An eye care professional may evaluate:

  • Tear film stability
  • Meibomian gland function
  • Completeness and quality of blinking
  • Eyelid position and movement
  • Corneal and conjunctival health

These findings help determine whether eyelid function is contributing to the patient’s symptoms and which treatment options are appropriate.

TriLift and Comprehensive Dry Eye Management

Dry eye disease has multiple causes, and no single treatment is suitable for every patient.

Depending on the examination findings, a personalized treatment plan may include artificial tears, warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, prescription medications, IPL therapy for appropriate cases of meibomian gland dysfunction, or other established dry eye treatments.

TriLift’s potential role in improving blink quality is an area of clinical investigation. Patients should discuss the available evidence, expected benefits, risks, and alternative treatments with their eye care provider before considering it for dry eye symptoms.

Personalized Dry Eye Care at New York Eye & Laser

Persistent dry eye symptoms can affect reading, computer use, driving, and everyday comfort. A comprehensive eye examination can help identify contributing factors and guide an individualized treatment plan.

At New York Eye & Laser, our goal is to help patients understand their dry eye condition and explore appropriate treatment options based on their individual needs.
