Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an eye disease caused by damage to the small blood vessels in the retina due to diabetes. It can lead to blurred vision, permanent vision loss, and even blindness if it becomes advanced and is not treated. How Does Diabetes Damage the Eyes? Diabetic retinopathy can damage the eye in various ways.\u00a0 Damage to retinal blood vessels Chronically elevated blood glucose damages the walls of the small retinal blood vessels. These vessels may develop tiny bulges called microaneurysms, which can leak fluid or small amounts of blood into the retina. Leakage and retinal swelling Damaged blood vessels may allow fluid, lipids, and other substances to escape into retinal tissue. If fluid accumulates in the macula, it causes swelling called diabetic macular edema (DME). DME can occur at different stages of diabetic retinopathy and is an important cause of diabetes-related central vision loss. Blocked blood vessels and reduced oxygen supply Some damaged blood vessels become blocked, reducing the blood and oxygen supply to parts of the retina. This is called retinal ischemia. When retinal tissue does not receive enough oxygen, it can release signals that stimulate abnormal blood vessel growth. Growth of abnormal new blood vessels In advanced disease, fragile new blood vessels may grow on the retina or optic nerve. These vessels are abnormal and can bleed into the vitreous, the gel-like substance filling the inside of the eye. The bleeding may cause floaters, cloudy vision, or sudden severe vision loss. Scar tissue may also develop and pull on the retina, potentially causing a retinal detachment What Are the Different Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy? Diabetic retinopathy is broadly divided into two main forms: non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). NPDR is the earlier form, while PDR is the more advanced form. NPDR can be further classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Stage 1: Mild NPDR Small areas of damage appear in the retinal blood vessels. Tiny bulges called microaneurysms may be visible during a retinal examination. Often no noticeable symptoms. Vision may remain normal. Usually monitored rather than treated directly. Stage 2: Moderate NPDR More retinal blood vessels become damaged, and small retinal hemorrhages or lipid deposits may appear. Often still has no symptoms. Some patients develop blurred vision, particularly if the macula swells. Requires continued monitoring, with frequency based on severity and individual risk. Stage 3: Severe NPDR Extensive retinal vessel damage and areas of poor blood flow develop. The retina may be at substantial risk of progressing to proliferative disease. LASER","og_description":"What is Diabetic Retinopathy? Vision may still appear normal. The risk of progression is higher. More frequent examinations and possible specialist referral are important. Stage 4: Proliferative DR Abnormal new blood vessels grow on the retina or optic nerve because of inadequate oxygen supply. Fragile vessels can bleed into the vitreous. Scar tissue can pull on the retina. Tractional retinal detachment and severe vision loss may occur. Treatment is often needed to reduce the risk of blindness. Common Symptoms of DME Blurred central vision. Difficulty reading small print. Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted. Objects appearing less sharp. Reduced ability to recognize fine details.
