Lasik PRK

PRK and LASIK are minimally invasive procedures that we use to correct  nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. PRK was first FDA approved in 1995 followed by LASIK in 2002. The two procedures are almost identical with the exception that a flap is created prior to the laser portion of the surgery in LASIK. In PRK, no flap is created prior to the laser.

While LASIK is safe, and only requires a very short healing time of a few days, PRK healing can take up to several weeks, with the first week characterized by inconsistent visual fluctuations and eye irritation. PRK, however, does not weaken the cornea, and is ideal for those who participate in contact sports. Because of its amazing safety, PRK is preferred in the majority of cases.

It is important to know that not everyone is a candidate for Laser Vision Correction.  Dr. Ky has more than a decade of experience performing both PRK and LASIK. He uses his expertise to determine whether either LASIK or PRK is right for you. At New York Eye &  Laser, P.C., Dr. Ky uses only FDA approved techniques and technology.

FAQs

Who are good candidates for PRK and LASIK?

Both PRK and LASIK are FDA approved for ages 18 years and above. However, it is highly recommended that only those who have stable vision for more than 12 months have the surgery. For those whose vision is still changing, CRT , is the preferred option for vision correction.

PRK and LASIK are generally for eyes that are healthy. Individuals with cataracts or retinal diseases may not be good candidates. Individuals who have had cataract surgery, but are not happy with their vision may be good candidates for the surgery.

Are either PRK or LASIK covered by my health insurance or vision plan?

Neither PRK nor LASIK are covered by any insurance. New York Eye &  Laser, P.C. does offer discounts to individuals with VSP.

How long does the PRK and LASIK surgery take?

The actual laser portion of laser vision correction is usually only several seconds and the entire surgery from start to finish is rarely more than 5 minutes. However, prior to surgery, individuals are required to undergo and extensive pre-op exam that can take as long as two hours and includes having their pupils dilated.

What is meant by “Custom” treatment?

Custom treatment uses the latest computerized mapping technology to determine which laser pattern achieves the best visual result. It is FDA approved and has been clinically proven to minimize the risk of unwanted side effects including glare and maximize visual clarity.

How long does PRK and LASIK last?

Both PRK and LASIK laser vision correction are permanent. If vision changes as people grow and age, it may be repeated. Only Dr. Ky will determine if repeating the surgery is appropriate.
